Asbel Kiprop stunned by Silas Kiplagat in the deepest 1500m race, ever. 3 National Records, 7 under 3:30.

It was no secret that Asbel Kiprop’s world record attempt would take place this year in Monaco. With a 3:27 race in Monaco 1-year ago, and a sub 1:44 800m run just 2 weeks ago, the world watched in hopes of seeing the first 3:25 1500m.

The field, together the greatest group of 1500m athletes ever assembled, had no problem latching on to Kiprop as he chased the untouchable 3:25.99 mark.

In race that featured an opening lap of 54 seconds and 800 meters in 1:50 it was clear that we would see national, personal, and maybe even a world record broken. But, as the pace slowed through 1200m and a 52 second last lap was needed to run under 3:26 (World Record Held by El Guerrouj), it was clear that Kiprop wouldn’t be crowned the fastest 1500m runner ever. In fact, it wasn’t certain that he would even win the race.

Silas Kiplagat, with whom Kiprop has battled down the home stretch in countless Diamond League races, ran steadily along the rail for every step of 1400m. He made his first and final move as he entered the home stretch, and as he passed the fading Kiprop he continued to accelerate, putting nearly a full second on the fellow Kenyan before the finish.

The initial disappoint of a failed World Record attempt was turned into amazement as the official results were presented. A World Leading 3:27.64 from Kiplagat, an unprecedented 7 athletes under the incredible 3:30 mark, and National Records for Djibouti, Ethiopia, Norway and New Zealand as Ayanleh Souleiman, Aman Wote, Henrik Igebrigtsen and Nick Willis run 3:29.58, 3:29.91, 3:31.46 and 3:29.91, respectively.

Silas Kiplagat will leave Monaco with the World Lead, a total of 12 Diamond League points, and the Diamond League Record, while 8 other athletes leave with personal bests and/or national records.
