topo RR review

Performance Neutral | 5.3 oz | 0 mm Heel-Toe | $130

Modeled after the Japanese Tabi sandal with a split-toe design, the Topo RR features a low-profile, zero-drop platform and responsive energy return. When training in the RR, you will notice the separated big toe a bit, but the sensation is not detrimental to performance. The ride is balanced, and allows the foot to make full contact with the ground at both slower and faster speeds. While not necessarily a “minimalist” shoe by purist definition, the RR allows for plenty of ground feel on both the road and packed dirt surfaces. Because of the split toe, I do not recommend this shoe for real trail runs where debris may be an issue.

Another unique feature of the RR is the BOA Closure System in lieu of traditional laces. This allows for a secure fit around the foot, and would make this shoe a great option for triathletes looking to transition quickly. Socks are recommended for runs over 30min unless conditions are perfect for barefoot wear.

Pros

  • Lightweight racer/trainer for efficient runners
  • May help reduce injury risk due to enhanced natural foot positioning in the shoe
  • BOA Closure System is simple to operate, practical, and would be very useful for T2

Cons

  • Tabi design will not be for everyone
  • Firm heel and separated arch could exasperate certain foot conditions like plantar fasciosis
  • Potentially awkward on technical trails and/or steep descents
